The Daily Verse offers two translations: the King James Version (KJV) and the American Standard Version (ASV). Both are public domain, both are trusted by millions, and both have been used for over a century. But they have real differences worth understanding.
King James Version (1611)
The KJV was commissioned by King James I of England and completed by 47 scholars over 7 years. It has shaped the English language more than any other single book. Phrases like "the salt of the earth," "a thorn in the flesh," and "the writing is on the wall" all come from the KJV.
Its language is formal and literary. "Thou," "thee," and "hath" are everywhere. Some readers find this beautiful and reverent. Others find it challenging to parse quickly.
American Standard Version (1901)
The ASV was produced by American scholars who worked alongside the British committee that created the Revised Version. Where the British team favored traditional phrasings, the American team prioritized literal accuracy above all else.
The ASV consistently translates the same Hebrew or Greek word with the same English word throughout the text. This makes it exceptionally useful for study because you can trace word usage across passages. It reads more plainly than the KJV, though still in somewhat formal English.
Side-by-Side Example
Psalm 23:1
KJV: "The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want."
ASV: "Jehovah is my shepherd; I shall not want."
Notice the ASV uses "Jehovah" where the KJV uses "LORD" in small caps. This is one of the most notable differences: the ASV renders the Hebrew name YHWH as "Jehovah" throughout, while the KJV uses "LORD."
Which Should You Choose?
If you grew up with the KJV and its language feels like home, choose the KJV. If you prefer a translation that prioritizes word-for-word accuracy and clearer sentence structure, try the ASV. Both are faithful to the original manuscripts. You cannot go wrong with either.
You can also switch at any time through your settings page. There is no lock-in.
